Fuck.
Let me just take a few moments of your time and use it to apply the smallest amount of critical thought to the idea of a fine to “teach” the working class a lesson.
This is more specifically referring to fines for not paying for something i.e. a public transport or parking ticket etc.
In fact let’s use transport fines as an example. What kind of person is a fare evader? You wouldn’t say a rich person or even someone from the middle classes. In fact anybody who can afford a ticket will generally buy one. Why wouldn’t they? So who does that leave? People who can’t afford it. So how do we stop these poor people from taking money from our precious company? Well at the moment the answer is to take more money from them. Yes, let’s make these people who can’t afford to buy an $11 max ticket pay $176 so they don’t do it again. Do I need to apply the critical thought or has my sarcasm done the job?
And this is generally the part where you say well what else are they meant to do? Yeah I thought of that. Just give them the chance to pay the fine via labour. God damn Warren, is it really that simple? Probably not but they set up a fairly efficient fining system I’m sure this too won’t be impossible. Shit I could give them a few pointers if they are really that incapable of actually doing something for the community.
